Red Raiders Sweep Sooners for First Big 12 Win

Lubbock, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team won its first Big 12 match of the season with a 3-0 sweep of the Oklahoma Sooners, at the United Spirit Arena, this evening. The Red Raiders secured the match victory with 30-27, 30-26 and 30-21 wins over the Crimson and Cream.
The starters for the match were seniors Desiree Batista and Brianna Florus, juniors Kattie Turner, Jamye Pauley, Philister Sang and Kiley Lyons and sophomore Emily Ziegler. Tonight's match marked Turner's first start for the Red Raiders.
In game one, Tech took its first lead (22-21), since they opened the scoring 1-0, on a service ace from Ziegler. Tech reclaimed a 27-26 lead on a service ace by sophomore Amy Charlebois. A kill by Sang put the Red Raiders up 28-26. Sang brought Tech to game point another kill and Florus sealed the 30-27 win with a kill. Sang and Lyons each tallied five kills in the first game. Sang also chipped in with five kills. Lyons notched a hitting percentage of .444 with five kills, one error and nine attempts.
After leading the whole game, the Red and Black got to game point on a kill from Florus. A hitting error by Oklahoma secured the 30-26 win in game two. Sang added to her totals with two kills and five digs. Batista pushed her dig total to 12, with six coming in each game.
Michelle Flores made her collegiate debut this evening and registered a kill to bring Tech to match point in game three. A kill by Charlebois secured the win for the game (30-21) and the match (3-0).
Sang ended the match with 12 kills and 10 digs; her sixth double-double of the season. Charlebois was just short of double digit kills with nine. Batista anchored the defense with 14 digs. Florus led the way for block with four block assists. Ziegler served as the primary setter and added 24 assists to her season total.
Tech's rescheduled match with Texas A&M on Fri., Sept. 23, has been cancelled due to potential weather and a new date has yet to be determined. The Red Raiders will return to the court next on Wed., Sept. 28, when they host the Kansas Jayhawks.
