LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's golf team has the addition of three new members, as announced by head coach Stacey Totman Wednesday. Alex Gibson, Jackie Smith and Stephanie Smith all signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Red Raiders next fall as freshmen.
Coach Totman looks forward to guiding the class of three well into the future at Texas Tech.
"I am so excited to get these three girls to campus next fall and watch them compete for Texas Tech," Totman said. "They are going to add a tremendous amount of depth to the program and they are fierce competitors that are not afraid of a challenge. Jackie, Alex, and Stephanie will play a big role in the future of this program, and I know that they are going to help us move forward."
Gibson is currently attending Pendleton School in Bradenton, Fla. She was at one time named the most valuable player on her high school squad and also of the Las Vegas Region. She finished first at the 2004 and 2005 City Junior, and third at the 2006 FCWT at Orange Lake in a larger field.
"Alex brings a great a deal of a national tournament experience with her to the college level," Totman said. "She is very consistent with her ball striking and works very hard on her game."
Jackie Smith comes to Tech from Tomball High in Tomball, Texas. She placed second at the 2006 5A State meet and also qualified for the 2006 USGA Women's Amateur Public Links event. She has participated in numerous tournaments for the Texas Junior Golf Tour and was also named to their All-Tournament Team during her stay. She placed first at the Barton Creek Tournament and second at the Amistad Golf Festival and the Kingwood tournament. Along with first and second performances, Smith has had numerous top five finishes on the TJGT.
"Jackie is very athletic and hits the ball a long way," Totman said. "Those two qualities together will make her a great college player. If Jackie continues to work hard she has the potential to be one of the best young players in college golf and at Texas Tech."
Stephanie Smith has signed with Tech as a senior at The Woodlands High in The Woodlands, Texas. She was named the 2005 Player of the Year for the Texas Legends Junior Tour. She took the title at the 2005 and 2006 South Texas Westfield PGA Junior Selection and third at the 2006 Region II-5A Tournament and the 2005 Texas State Championships. Smith has been a consistent player on the AJGA Tour and with the TJGT.
"Stephanie is a diamond in the rough," Totman said. "She has only been playing golf for a short time, but has already shown that she can compete with the best junior players in the country. Stephanie is a tough competitor and is ready to take her game to the collegiate level."
