Lubbock, Texas - The Texas Tech men's basketball program has signed four players to National Letters of Intent on the opening day of the early signing period. Three of the newly signed Red Raiders will enter Texas Tech as freshmen and all are from the Lone Star State. The Texas trio will be joined by a junior college transfer from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Plano guard, John Roberson (5-11, 165) averaged 17.1 points per game and 7.2 assists per game as a junior. Last season, Plano won the Class 5A State Championship in overtime (60-58) as Roberson finished with 24 points and five rebounds.
Kingwood's Mike Singletary scored 12 points and had five rebounds against Roberson's team in last year's state championship game. At 6-5 and 215, Singletary was the second Red Raider to ink his National Letter of Intent with Coach Knight.
D'Walyn Roberts is the third member of the Texas trio to become a Red Raider. Roberts (6-8, 186) averaged 13.9 points and nine rebounds per game for Duncanville last season.
In addition to being new Red Raiders and teammates, all three incoming freshmen are very highly rated among the best players in the state. Mike Singletary is considered the No. 5 player in Texas, John Roberson is rated as the No. 6 player in the state, and D'Walyn Roberts is listed as the No. 11 player in Texas.
Sao Paulo, Brazil's Ricardo De Bem, a 6-10, 240-pound player at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, was the fourth player to sign his National Letter of Intent with Texas Tech. De Bem averaged 11.9 points and eight rebounds as a WNCC freshman.
The Red Raiders begin the 2006-2007 season on Saturday, November 11, against Sam Houston State. Tip-off at the United Spirit Arena is at 1:00 PM as Coach Bob Knight needs 11 victories to break the all-time record for Division I wins held by North Carolina's Dean Smith. Coach Knight is 869-350 (.713) in 40 seasons of head coaching.
