No. 61 Women's Tennis Handles Abilene Christian, 6-1

Lubbock, Texas - Texas Tech women's tennis defeated the Abilene Christian Wildcats, 6-1, in its' season opener, at the McLeod Tennis Center, in Lubbock, this afternoon. The Lady Raiders begin the 2006 season at 1-0.
The Lady Raiders won the doubles point to start the match. Tara Browning and Lakann Wagley defeated Holly Lindloff and Meagan Brown, 8-1, at the No. 1 spot. No. 23 Erin Hunter and Katja Kovacic topped Irene Squillaci and Lana Pavlin, 8-1, at the No. 2 spot. Cigdem Duru and Samantha van der Drift edged Sarah Drummond and Alexandra Vucic, 8-1, at the No. 3 spot.
In the singles matches, at the No. 1 spot, Duru edged Squillaci, 6-4, 6-2. At the No. 2 spot, No. 75 Browning topped Pavlin, 6-1, 6-3. Janet Durham played at the No. 3 spot and defeated Brown, 6-4, 6-0. At the No. 4 spot, van der Drift edged Lindloff, 6-1, 4-6, 10-8. At the No. 5 spot, ACU's Sarah Drummond defeated Red Raider Kovacic, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. At the No. 6 spot, Hunter topped Sara Baker, 6-1, 6-3.
In other matches played, not affecting the overall team score, Wagley beat Vucic, 6-3, 6-1, Anne Sophie Fankam beat Heidi Lindloff, 7-5, 6-2, and Deanna Carrillo defeated Allison Tetrick, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8. In other doubles action, Durham and Fankam edged Baker and Tetrick, 8-5.
"This was a great start to the season," said head coach Cari Groce. "We played some tough matches and I was really impressed with some of the battles I saw. Hopefully today is an indication of things to come for this team."
