TECH SET FOR SECOND ANNUAL COX COMMUNICATIONS MIDLAND COLLEGIATE CLASSIC
The Texas Tech Red Raiders will take a three-game win streak to Midland this weekend for the second annual Cox Communications Midland Collegiate Classic. The Red Raiders open up tournament play on Thursday against Dallas Baptist and will face Texas-Arlington on Friday. Tech will wrap up round robin play on Saturday with a 5 p.m. game against Oral Roberts.
The Red Raiders open up the tournament on Thursday afternoon against Dallas Baptist and will be looking for some revenge as the Patriots handed Tech a 26-16 loss in the final game of a three-game series last year in Lubbock. The Patriots won that series from Tech 2-1 after the Red Raiders took the opener 6-2. Tech and Texas-Arlington will meet on Friday afternoon and the Red Raiders will be looking to extend a 14-game win streak over the Mavericks. Tech won both meetings between the two clubs last season and will be meeting on a neutral field for the first time since 1990 (Louisiana Classic). The final game of the tournament will feature Texas Tech and Oral Roberts and will be the first meeting between these two schools since 1993. Oral Roberts is the lone team in this year's classic that advanced to the NCAA Regionals in 2005.
Texas Tech enters the weekend on a three-game win streak and fresh off a 16-0 win over Eastern New Mexico on Monday afternoon. The game was added late Sunday after Tech and St. John's were forced to cancel the first two games of that three-game series due to inclement weather. The Red Raiders defeated St. John's on Sunday afternoon 5-4 after drawing a bases loaded hit batter in the bottom of the ninth.
Tickets for Cox Communications Midland Collegiate Classic are on sale now and can be purchased by calling (432) 520-2255.
A LOOK AT DALLAS BAPTIST
The Dallas Baptist Patriots enter Thursday's game against Texas Tech with a 5-2 overall record after defeating Stephen F. Austin 7-4 on Tuesday evening. The Patriots' two losses have come against Portland (13-9 on Feb. 13) and this past weekend against Southern Illinois (8-5 on Feb. 17). Dallas Baptist is coached by former Red Raider Eric Newman who is 37-25 in two seasons at the school.
A LOOK AT TEXAS-ARLINGTON
Texas-Arlington enters the Midland Collegiate Classic with an overall record of 3-4 after dropping a Tuesday night contest to Texas A&M 14-3. Three of the four losses by the Mavericks have come at the hands of Big 12 opponents Texas A&M, Kansas State and Baylor. UTA is coached by Jeff Curtis who is in his fifth season.
A LOOK AT ORAL ROBERTS
Oral Roberts is the only team in this year's tournament field that advanced to the NCAA postseason a year ago and is 4-1 so far in 2006. ORU's lone setback this season was against Texas-Arlington this past weekend at the UTA Invitational. The Golden Eagles are coached by Rob Walton who is in his third season.
AGAINST THE TOURNAMENT FIELD
Dallas Baptist: Thursday's game will mark the sixth all-time meeting between the two schools and DBU leads the series 3-2 after taking 2-of-3 from the Red Raiders in 2005.
Texas-Arlington: Friday's game will be the 23rd all-time meeting and the Red Raiders lead the series 18-4.
Oral Roberts: Saturday's classic will mark the 13th meeting and the all-time series is tied at 6-6.
NEXT UP FOR TEXAS TECH
Texas Tech will have Sunday and Monday off before traveling to Tempe, Arizona on Tuesday where the Red Raiders will face the Arizona State Sun Devils. First pitch at Packard Stadium is set for 6 p.m. local time and 8 p.m. (CT). Following Tuesday's game at Arizona State the Red Raiders will have just one day off before opening up a three-game series against Campbell on Thursday, March 2.
