March 06, 2006 | Men's Basketball
March 6, 2006
With the non-conference and conference portions of the 2005-2006 season completed, two Red Raiders have been selected to conference teams by the league coaches.
Jarrius Jackson was named to the All-Big 12 First Team. The junior from Monroe, Louisiana was the league's leading scorer in the Big 12 Conference this season. He averaged 20.3 ppg for the season (608 points) and 21.7 ppg in conference play (347 points).
Jay has started 71 consecutive games and has started 95-of-97 games as a Red Raider. His 1,495 career points places him in the 12th spot among all Texas Tech's 1,000-point scorers between Rayford Young's 1,515 points and Greg Lowery's 1,476 points. Jay scored 41 points in 40 minutes against the Huskers in Texas Tech's first conference road win of the season. He scored 18 points in the first half and 23 points in the second half. Jay was 15-of-23 from the field, made 5-of-7 three-pointers, and 6-of-7 free throws.
Martin was named All-Big 12 Honorable Mention. The sophomore from Sulphur, Louisiana, started 29-of-30 games this season and averaged 13.9 ppg for the season and 12.1 ppg in conference play. Martin, the team's second leading scorer, was first on the team in rebounding with 5.3 boards per game.
This marks the fifth consecutive season the Red Raiders have had a player on the All-Big 12 First Team. Andre Emmett earned first team conference honors in three seasons (2001-2004). Ronald Ross was selected to the first team last season.
Three other Red Raiders have earned first team honors since the Big 12 Conference began ten years ago. Tony Battie garnered first team honors for the 1996-1997 season. Cory Carr was named to the first team squad for the 1997-1998 season and Rayford Young earned his honors for the 1998-1999 season.
The All-Big 12 awards are selected by the league's head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.
The All-Big 12 First, Second, Third, and Honorable Mention teams were also announced, while conference coaches also selected All-Defensive and All-Rookie Teams for the first time.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders (14-16, 6-10 Big 12) are seeded eighth in this week's Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship and will play the ninth-seeded Kansas State Wildcats (15-12, 6-10 Big 12) in the first game on Thursday, March 9 at 11:30 AM at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. The game will be broadcast on ESPN Regional and nationally on ESPNU on Thursday morning with Dave Armstrong (play-by-play) and Paul Splittorff (color analyst) calling the action. The Texas Tech ticket office has good side-court balcony seats available (sections 311-313) for $210 all-sessions or for $35 for a single session.
