LUBBOCK, Texas - 13th-ranked Oklahoma broke open a one-run game with five runs in the top of the eighth to hand Texas Tech an 8-2 loss in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field. The win completes a three-game sweep for the Sooners and marks the first time Tech has been swept at home since the Nebraska series in 2001.
Texas Tech falls to 26-17-1 on the season and to 6-10-1 in Big 12 play while the Sooners improve to 32-10 and 11-4.
Both teams traded single runs over the first four innings with Tech grabbing a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third. Freshman left fielder Roger Kieschnick gave Tech its only lead of the game when he blasted a solo home run that bounced off the scoreboard in left-center field.
The Sooners came right back in the top of the fourth with a solo run on a sacrifice fly by center fielder Aaron Ivey that scored Joe Dunigan.
Oklahoma scored what turned out to be the game winning run in the top of the fifth when shortstop Freddy Rodriguez laced an RBI single into left and that allowed Ryan Rohlinger to score from second. Rohlinger reached on a two-out single to keep the Sooners alive in the frame.
Things fell apart for the Red Raiders in the top of the eighth as Oklahoma pounded out five runs on seven hits and took advantage of Tech's first fielding error of this three-game series.
Josh Tomlin took the loss for Tech on the mound as he surrendered three runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. P.J. Sandoval (6-1) allowed just one earned run on eight hits over 7 1/3 innings to take the win for the Sooners.
Texas Tech returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when the New Mexico Lobos come to Dan Law Field for a 3 p.m. contest.
