LUBBOCK, Texas - After advancing through two rounds of stroke play at the U.S. Women's Public Links Championship, Texas Tech redshirt freshman golfer Megan Dowdy (Leander, Texas) dropped a 3 and 1 decision to Diane Kwon (Fremont, Calif.) in the first round of match play Thursday afternoon at Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo, Colo.
Dowdy never trailed by more than three and threatened Kwon on the 15th hole. With Kwon holding a 2-Up advantage, Dowdy birdied the 15th to bring the match back to one. Kwon went on to birdie both 16 and 17 to secure the win.
Dowdy posted consecutive rounds of 74 to advance to the match play portion of the Pub Links. She qualified for her second-straight U.S. Women's Public Links Championship on May 26 in San Antonio at Pecan Valley.
Dowdy led the Lady Raiders with a 76.9 stroke average during the 2005-06 season and posted two top 20 finishes. Her top finish was a seventh-place showing at the Rio Verde Invitational in Arizona, where she helped lead the team to a fourth-place tie. She also finished 11th at the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz., and posted season-low 71s in back-to-back rounds.
