Red Raiders Fall in Final Sun Bowl Match

EL PASO, Texas - With a 2-1 advantage, Texas Tech dropped the final two games to lose to New Mexico State at the Ready One Sun Bowl Invitational. The Aggies proved victorious with scores of 23-20, 31-29, 27-30, 30-22, 15-10. Tech moves to 2-2 on the season after completion of its first weekend of volleyball.
New Mexico State had the clear edge in hitting percentage, firing .277 (74 kills, 31 errors, 155 attempts) compared to Tech's .185 (65 kills, 32 errors, 178 attempts). Five Aggies finished in double-figures for kills, with Alice Borden leading the way with 21. Defensively, New Mexico State was heavily favored in digs, tallying 71 to the Red Raiders' 41.
For the Red and Black, Philister Sang knocked down 21 kills, while Kiley Lyons added 13 and Alicia Ostmeyer had 11. Emily Ziegler led in assists (29) and tallied four of Tech's 11 service aces. The Red Raiders blocked on 15 occasions. Amy Charlebois led in the blocking effort with eight assisted. Ostmeyer added six assisted blocks.
Next week the Red Raiders travel to Edinburg, Texas, to take on two Lone Star teams in host Texas-Pan American and Texas State. The UT-Pan American Tournament gets underway when Tech faces Texas State on Saturday, September 2.
