Longhorns Defeat Tech in Three Games

AUSTIN, Texas - The Red Raider volleyball team opened Big 12 play with a disappointing loss to in-state rival Texas, 0-3. The Longhorns captured the opening-day conference match with games of 30-21, 30-19, 30-28. Tech now falls to 7-3 on the season, with a 0-1 Big 12 record, while No. 5 Texas is 6-2 overall, 1-0 Big 12.
Tech kept up with the nation's No. 5 squad in the first game and was up by as much as five with an 11-6 score. Texas captured the lead at 16-15 to which Tech wasn't able to cover, falling 30-21.
In the second game, the Red Raiders jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. Texas grabbed its first lead at 8-7 and came back with a strong effort. With an 18-15 score, the Longhorns went on a 12-4 run to finish the game 30-19. During the frame, Texas accumulated a .394 hitting percentage compared to the Raiders' .105.
Tech remained in sync with Texas for much of the third frame, as the teams were tied on 13 occasions. When the Red Raiders captured the lead at 8-7, they held on to maintain that advantage until Texas moved ahead at 17-16. With a back-and-forth battle of points, Tech was ahead at 28-27, but the Longhorns came out with a strong attack to finish the match on two kills and an ace.
Philister Sang led the Raiders with a dozen kills to aid in a .200 hitting percentage. Holly Hicks led in assists for a third contest with 18. Defensively, Sang fronted the effort in digs with 12, while Emily Ziegler added 11. Amy Charlebois had three blocks for the team for the second-straight match.
The Red Raiders will have their home opener on Saturday, September 16, against Colorado. The first serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the United Spirit Arena.
