Red Raiders Win UTPA Volleyball Invite

EDINBURG, Texas - With their second sweep of the day, the Red Raiders took the title at the UTPA Volleyball Invitational with a 3-0 win over UTPA on Saturday. Tech cruised to a victory over the Lady Broncs with scores of 30-19, 30-19, 30-24. The tournament victory is the first title for the Red Raiders since last year's 2005 SMU Tournament.
The Red Raiders had three student-athletes named to the all-tournament team. Philister Sang was named the tournament's most valuable player. This marks the second time Sang has been given a tournament MVP. Amy Charlebois and Laura Gottschalk were also bestowed the honor. Charlebois was also named for her efforts in last week's Ready One Sun Bowl Invitational with an all-tournament honor. The accolade is the first for Gottschalk.
In the first game against UTPA, Tech went on an 8-1 run after a tie at 10. The Red Raiders maintained a lead and finished the game off with a 10-3 run to finish 30-19. Tech jumped out to an early lead in the second game, 5-0. They took game two with a score of 30-19. In game three, Tech started with a 6-2 lead to which the Lady Broncs answered with a 6-1 run to capture the lead. The Red Raiders came back to gain the lead and an eventual win 30-24.
Amy Charlebois led the team in kills with nine, with freshman Brittany Hughes adding eight. Emily Ziegler tallied 25 assists and Holly Hicks added 17. Laura Gottschalk led the effort in blocks for the second-straight match, as she assisted in defending three.
