Tech Men in Second After Two Rounds at Oklahoma Intercollegiate

LUBBOCK, Texas - With two rounds of play in the Oklahoma Intercollegiate complete Monday, the No. 25 Red Raiders currently sit in a second-place tie in the team standings at the Oak Tree Golf Club in Edmond, Okla. Sophomore Will Griffin, meanwhile, is in the hunt for his second medal of the season, as he is in a tie atop the leaderboard with a one-over 143.
SMU, who fired a round-best 281 on the day, leads the pack at 588, while Tech and Texas A&M are just five strokes back at 593. Baylor is in the fourth spot, with No. 34 Arkansas and Oklahoma rounding off the leaders at fifth and sixth, respectively.
The Red Raiders carded a ten-over 294 Monday behind an even-par 71 from Garrett Merrell and a two-over 73 from Santiago Rivas. Merrell birdied four holes on the day, including a long 538-yard 16th hole, while Rivas shot a consistent round all day. Griffin, who recorded birdies on two, three and five to start the day, had a couple difficulties on the back nine and finished at 74. Sergio Franky, 76, and Matt Smith, 79, wrapped up Tech's scoring for the day.
Griffin's 143 leads the way in a first-place tie, while Merrell is tied for fifth at four-over 146. Rivas sits in a tie at 11th place with a seven-over 149.
Tech will look to climb into position for its second team title of the season tomorrow as the event concludes. The Red Raiders will tee off just after 11 a.m. with live stats available at www.golfstat.com.
