Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate Awaits Red Raider Men

LUBBOCK, Texas - With two team titles in hand already this fall, the Texas Tech Men's Golf team will look to add a third to its collection Mon. and Tues., Oct. 29-30 at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M. It will be the final event for the Red Raiders this fall as they prepare for their Spring season which tees off in February.
The par-71, 7,078-yard New Mexico State University Golf Course will play host to 16 teams besides Tech. Joining the Red Raiders will be host New Mexico State, Nevada, Northern Colorado, Washington State, Nebraska, Kansas State, Texas-Arlington, Louisiana-Monroe, Cal. Poly, Loyola Marymount, Townson, Miami (Ohio), Ball State, South Alabama, Rice and UTEP.
The Red Raiders are coming off a plus-40 892 showing at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate two weeks ago. Will Griffin led Tech with a second-place showing at three-over 216, while Garrett Merrell turned in a strong showing with an 11-over 224 to tie for seventh place as the Red Raiders placed three in the top 10. Tech trailed SMU by five strokes going into the final round and shot itself into a tie with the Mustangs to take home a share of the team title.
Sands will carry a lineup consisting of Griffin, Merrell, Santiago Rivas and freshmen Sergio Franky and Nils Floren to N.M. Griffin, the reigning Big 12 golfer of the month, leads the group with a 71.5 stroke average. Rivas, a junior, is close behind with a 73.00 average.
