LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech WR Michael Crabtree (Dallas, Texas) is arguably having the finest freshman receiving season in NCAA history and has been recognized for his efforts by The Tallahassee Quarterback Club. The organization named Crabtree one of 10 semifinalists for the prestigious Biletnikoff Award, presented annually to the nation's top receiver.
Crabtree's emergence in his first collegiate season came has captivated the college football world as he has amassed NCAA records in freshman receiving yards (1,451) and freshman receiving touchdowns (18). He began the season with six-straight games with multi-touchdowns, including five three-touchdown games. His 18 scoring catches also set a new Big 12 Conference standard, breaking the previous record of 17, set by Oklahoma State's Rashaun Woods in 2002.
Additionally, he has recorded 100+ receiving yards in all but one game and leads the country with 161.2 yards per game and 11.1 receptions. Crabtree's 108 points leads all scorers as does his 18 touchdowns, which have come in seven of nine games this year.
The Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc., the creator and sponsor of the Biletnikoff Award, is an independent, charitable organization founded in 1994. A number of people established the award and many more have contributed to its development as one of the most prominent in college football. The ideal of a college receiver's award was not a novel one, as a number of organizations throughout America considered establishing it.
Over 50 prominent journalists, commentators, announcers and former player select the winner through a process audited by a CPA firm. While the TQC Foundation Trustees manage the organization, they have no role in the winner's selection. The award is presented annually on the The Home Depot College Awards Show on ESPN. The group hosts the party at Walt Disney World for the finalist and sponsoring organizations of the many awards presented on ESPN.
