- Gives Texas Tech an all-time record of 53-21 on Homecoming and the Red Raiders have won 14 of the last 16 contests.
CRABTREE ESTABLISHES NEW NCAA FRESHMAN RECORD, TIES BIG 12 RECORD
Freshman sensation Michael Crabtree added yet another record to his growing list of accolades this evening as he became the NCAA's all-time leading touchdown receptions leader for a freshman. He surpassed Jabar Gaffney (Florida 2000), Mike Williams (USC, 2002) and Devone Bess (Hawaii, 2005) who each had 14 touchdown catches during their freshman campaigns. His third touchdown of the game moved him into a tie for the Big 12 lead in single-season touchdown receptions as he now has 17 on the season and is tied with Rashaun Woods of Oklahoma State who caught 17 back in 2002.
- Notched his 15th touchdown reception (32-yard pass from Harrell) of the season on Tech's second possession of the first quarter.
- Hauled in his second touchdown of the game when he caught a two-yard pass from Harrell with 21 seconds remaining in the first half.
- Picked up his fifth, three-touchdown game of the season when he caught a 15-yard pass from Harrell with 9:24 remaining in the game. The touchdown tied the Big 12 record for most receiving TD's in a single season.
- Posted his six-straight game of over 100 yards receiving as he ended the night with 154 yards on 10 receptions.
DEFENSE GETTING RUFF
Interim defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeil promised the Red Raider faithful that his group would be aggressive - so far he's lived up to that promise. The Red Raider defense turned in one of its best efforts in a Big 12 contest in the Mike Leach era as the unit held the Cyclones to just 287 yards of total offense. Tech's best defensive effort in a Big 12 game under Mike Leach was against Baylor last season when the Red Raiders held the Bears to just 217 yards of total offense but surrendered 21 points in a 55-21 win. Iowa State came into tonight's game averaging 363.1 yards-per-game of total offense and racked up 415 yards last week at Nebraska against the Blackshirt defense
- The defense extended its shutout to four straight quarters after holding the Cyclones scoreless in the first quarter. The Tech defensive unit held Northwester State scoreless over the final three periods last week. The Iowa State field goal with 26 seconds left in the first half was the result of a Graham Harrell interception in Iowa State territory. As a unit, the Red Raiders held the Cylones to just 84 yards of total offense in the first half.
- Junior safety Darcel McBath registered the first defensive touchdown of the season for the Red Raiders when he returned a fumble 16-yards for a touchdown that gave Tech a 27-0 lead with 5:09 remaining in the first half. Victor Hunter was credited with the forced fumble. The last time a Tech player returned a fumble for a touchdown was Chris Hudler at Oklahoma State (recovered the ball in the endzone) in 2005.
NOTING THE RED RAIDERS
- Texas Tech did not score on its opening possession for the first time this season snapping a streak of five-straight games in which Tech scored a touchdown on its initial drive. The Red Raiders went three-and-out on its opening drive.
- Junior quarterback Graham Harrell gave Tech a 13-0 lead with 2:42 remaining in the first quarter when he scored on one-yard sneak. It was his second rushing touchdown of the season.
- Senior receiver Danny Amendola gave Tech a 34-3 lead with 13:47 remaining in the third quarter when he caught a 17-yard pass from Harrell. The receiving touchdown was his fourth of the season.
- Junior quarterback Graham Harrell needs just one more 400-yard passing game to tie the school record for the most in a single career. Harrell now has eight, 400-plus yard games and can tie Kliff Kingsbury (1999-2002) and BJ Symons (2003) in his next outing.
