LUBBOCK, Texas - After a strong showing through the first two rounds Monday, the Lady Raiders golf team capped it off by tying the lowest round score in school history, 291, to win the McHaney/Moorehead Invitational title at the Rawls Course Tuesday. Tech fired a 24-over 900 to take the team crown by 19 strokes.
Georgia State shot a 43-over 919 to finish in second place. Big 12 competitors Colorado, 44-over 920, and Oklahoma, 51-over 927, finished third and fourth, respectively. Arkansas Little Rock rounded off the top five teams at 929.
"I was really happy with how the girls did," Tech coach Stacey Totman said. "It's not easy to play with a lead on the final day. Everyone stepped up and had excellent rounds."
Six Tech performers finished among the top 20 in the event. Junior Megan Dowdy paced Tech with a two-over 221 finish to the tournament in second place, marking the best overall finish of her career. Junior Gloriana Soto fired a six-over 227 to finish in seventh place, while junior Ulrika Van Niekerk carded a nine-over 228 to finish in ninth place and give the Lady Raiders three top 10 finishers in the tournament, the first such occurrence since 2002.
Rosalyn Kim and Alex Gibson rounded off Tech's lineup with a 14-over 233 each to tie for 18th place. Competing as an individual, Tracy Stanford shot a 13-over 232 to finish in a tie at the 16th position.
The Lady Raiders started off the tournament Monday with a 609 through the first two rounds, including a second-round 296 to hold a four stroke lead going into the last 18 holes Tuesday. Soto and Gibson each fired a two-under 71 on the final round to lead the team, while Dowdy ended the day with a one-over 74 after starting the first nine holes at three over.
"We are starting to see our potential," Totman said. "This group has worked so hard, and they really want to be successful."
Tech will enjoy a couple weeks off before heading to sunny Fort Myers, Fla. for the Pat Bradley Championship hosted by Florida International Oct. 29-30.
