Red Raider Tennis Can't Hold Off Hard-hitting Huskies

SEATTLE, Wash. - The Texas Tech men's tennis team received their second loss of the season today at the Great Northwest Shootout. The Washington Huskies (6-1) won 4-1 over the Red Raiders (4-2) in the final match of the three-day tournament.
The No. 35 ranked Huskies doubles team of Patrik Fischer and Michael Ricks won over Michael Breler and Sinisa Markovic in the No. 2 doubles spot. Washington's Daniel Chu and Derek Drabble clinched the doubles point for the Huskies winning 8-6 over seniors Teddy DiBlasi and Dimitrio Martinez. Bojan Szumanski and Christian Rojmar were ahead 8-7 in the No. 1 doubles match when it was halted.
After the intermission, Tech came out looking to bounce back in singles competition. Rojmar and Milos Kustudija were the first two to suffer losses at the hands of the Huskies, putting Tech behind 3-0. In the No. 5 position, Tech's Breler fought of Chu, 6-1, 6-3 to put the Red Raiders on the board.
Heading into the last three matches of the day, Tech was trying to close the gap on a 3-1 deficit with Washington leading in two of the remaining matches. Washington's Andy Kuharszky quelled any hope of a comeback from the Red Raiders by winning four-straight games over No. 92 ranked Markovic. Markovic was ahead 5-3 in the second set but couldn't push Kuharszky into a third, losing 6-4, 7-5. This was his first singles loss of the season as he currently holds a 4-1 singles record.
The Red Raider men's tennis team will be back on the courts on Saturday, Feb. 17, at noon as they host Rice at the Falls Country Club. For more information and complete results visit www.texastech.com.
