Tucson, Ariz. - Taryn Mowatt struck out 10 and earned her fourth consecutive win over Texas Tech (dating back to 2006) as No. 4 Arizona beat the Red Raiders, 8-1, in championship action at the 2007 Worth Wildcat tournament in Tucson, Ariz. The Wildcats improve to 9-2 on the season, while Texas Tech moves to 6-4 in 2007.
Ashly Jacobs (4-3) took the loss for the Red Raiders as the freshman made her second start against the Wildcats of the weekend.
The Wildcats drew first blood in the bottom of the first when, with one out and after a pair of walks were issued to K'Le Arredondo and Jenae Leles, shortstop Kristie Fox greeted the first-pitch strike with a shot over the right center field fence. Jacobs settled down to retire the side on a sliding catch of a short fly ball in left by Devin Zaragoza and coaxed a ground ball from Chelsie Mesa.
The Red Raiders responded in the top of the second when Jennifer Corkin drew a leadoff walk. With two outs she advanced to second on a wild pitch by Mowatt and scored when catcher Robyn Wike looped a single to center.
Arizona added another run in the third when Leles got hit by a pitch and came around to score on a Fox double to the wall down the line in right.
Texas Tech threatened in the fourth when designated player Montana Patin drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second when Corkin got hit. Mowatt retired the next three hitters, strike out, fly to center and fly to left to strand the pair.
The Wildcats added three more in the bottom of the fourth after a one-out single by Sam Banister was followed by a pinch runner, Jill Malina. Jacobs got the second out when Adriene Acton failed to convert a bunt attempt and lined out to Natalie Kula. But, a Caitlin Lowe single to left advanced Malina to second and both came around to score when Arredondo drilled a double down the line in left, chasing Jacobs for Sarah Losleben. Leles ran the count to 3-2 and smacked the Losleben offering to left for a run-scoring double. Fox looked at strike three to end the inning.
Arizona added a run in the sixth when Fox got aboard on a fielder's choice and came around to score on a Mesa double to the wall.
The Red Raiders travel to Florida for competition in Miami and Boca Raton. The weekly release will be updated by Tuesday morning.
