LUBBOCK, Texas - The top-ranked BYU Cougars proved to be too much for the Lady Raider tennis team as they lost 5-2 today at the Lubbock Country Club. Next up, the team takes on the Air Force Falcons in the third match of the weekend at noon at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The Cougars entered the match in full force as the Red Raiders could not come up with a doubles victory. All three pairs suffered losses, giving BYU the early 1-0 lead. Tech's No. 1 duo of Janet Durham and Samantha van der Drift received their first loss of the season at the hands of Miccoli and Surkova, 8-4. The two lead their team in doubles with an overall 6-1 record, and fall to 2-1 in the No. 1 position.
Entering singles, the competition was stiff as both teams saw wins. BYU was the first to strike as they defeated both senior Lakann Wagley and freshman Kerryn Potgieter 6-2, 6-1, respectively. In the No. 1 spot, van der Drift put Tech on the board edging Lauren Jones in three sets, improving her singles record to 6-2.
On the No. 3 court, Durham squared off with BYU's Kristina Doerr. Doerr won the first set 6-4, but Durham came back in the second and also notched in a 6-4 win. In the third set, Doerr capitalized on the match pulling away 6-2, and captured the win for the Cougars.
In the final two matches of the day, both Anne Sophie Fankam and Maria Jose Andres went into super-tiebreaker third sets. Andres came up short against Dolly Chang, 10-8, but Fankam pulled out a 10-8 win over Jennifer Miccoli.
"This was a very good preparation match for us," commented head Coach Cari Groce. "No doubt I would have liked to see us pull out wins in a few positions, as we went point-to-point with them on a few occasions, but they just came up with bigger shots than us. Overall, BYU was the better team."
Tech women's tennis will host the final match of the weekend tomorrow, Feb. 25, against Air Force at noon at the McLeod Tennis Center. The Red Raiders defeated the Falcons 6-1 last season, and lead the series 5-2. For more information and complete results visit www.texastech.com.
