LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis team will hit the road for the first of two tournaments this March. The Red Raiders will face Texas-Pan American in the first round of the HEB Collegiate Tennis Invitational tomorrow, March 2, at 9 a.m.
In 2005, Tech won the HEB tourney by defeating the host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4-2 in a comeback victory. Last season the team made it to the third round before falling to ranked Louisville, 4-2. In the past five years, Tech has either won or entered the finals of this tournament.
"This weekend will be very tough for us as we will see seven of eight top-ranked teams," said Coach Tim Siegel. "This month of March is going to be extremely difficult as well. We will have to show up to every match and play well as a team to really have a chance at the NCAA tourney."
Last time out, the Raiders returned outside for the first time in 2007 and swept Abilene Christian 7-0. Captain Dimitrio Martinez improved his undefeated singles record to 6-0, while No. 41 Bojan Szumanski put himself on a winning track defeating Juan Nunez, 6-2, 6-3, heading into a weekend of stiff competition.
In addition to No. 54 Texas A&M Corpus Christi, this year's tournament includes No. 62 Brigham Young, No. 41 Middle Tennessee State, No. 36 Old Dominion, No. 32 South Alabama, Texas-Pan American, No. 29 Texas Tech and No. 50 Western Michigan.
