LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech advanced to the semi-finals in the HEB Collegiate Tennis Invitational in Corpus Christi, Texas. Tech swept Texas-Pan American, 5-0, then went on to top No. 50 Western Michigan in the first and second rounds of play.
In the first match, the Raiders quickly jumped on UTPA capturing wins in the No. 1 and 3 doubles positions. Singles continued to dominate as Bojan Szumanski, Dimitrio Martinez, Christian Rojmar and Michael Breler all breezed through their matches, giving Tech the 5-0 win.
Later in the day, Tech knew their second match wouldn't easy as Western Michigan had upset No. 41 Middle Tennessee State in the first round. Beginning with singles competition, Szumanski, Martinez, Rojmar and Breler again put their team on the board winning their matches over the Broncos. In the No. 6 spot, Milos Kustudija suffered Tech's only loss at the hands of WMU's Bryan Norville, 6-3, 6-4.
In 2005, Tech won the HEB tourney by defeating the host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4-2 in a comeback victory. Last season the team made it to the third round before falling to ranked Louisville, 4-2. The HEB Invitational is the country's oldest NCAA Division I team tennis tournament, and over the past five years Tech has either won or entered the finals.
