LUBBOCK, Texas-Becoming familiar with the road, the Texas Tech men's tennis team will open conference play in Lincoln, Nebraska. The team will face the Cornhuskers on Sunday, March 25, at 1:30 p.m. at the NU Varsity Courts.
Tech sits 9-5 on the season after going 1-2 at the Blue Gray College Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala., last weekend. Nebraska holds a 6-6 record, and is set to play their first Big 12 match against Baylor on Friday. Tech leads the series 11-3, coming off a 6-1 win last season.
In The Rankings
Tech entered this season ranked No. 44, with two players, Bojan Szumanski and Sinisa Markovic, ranked No. 12 and 92 respectively. Three weeks ago, the men's team broke into the top 25 with a 6-2 record. Last week the team received their highest ranking of the season of 22.
The Raiders currently sits at No. 31 after a tough weekend at the Blue Gray Classic. Szumanski is ranked No. 33 in singles with a 4-5 dual record, 16-8 overall. Also recognized in doubles are Szumanski and Christian Rojmar who sit at No. 34 with a record of 6-3, having played five ranked doubles pairs this season.
Last Time Out
The Red Raiders continued their series of road matches as they competed in the Blue Gray College Tennis Classic last. Their second duals tournament of the season didn't go as smoothly as they had hoped, with the team playing without two of their top singles players.
Tech lost their first match 4-1 to No. 20 Virginia Commonwealth. Szumanski went down in the first set with a severe ankle injury, and the No. 5 singles clutch player Michael Breler sat out due to illness. The team bounced back later in the afternoon against Brown, 4-1, with senior Martinez filling in the No. 1 spot for the first time and clinching the match point.
Tech's young roster couldn't break the experienced No. 32 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, as they fell 4-0. Despite the loss, head Coach Tim Siegel felt his team really stepped up and fought hard in the weekend's competition.
Texas Tech Record Book
Taking a glance at the men's tennis record book, two current Red Raiders are in a four-way tie for number one on the career singles record. Martinez and Szumanski both notched in their 63rd singles win, tying them with current assistant coach Petar Danolic and former teammate Michael Innerebner. Szumanski is also tied for number one in career doubles victories with Innerebner at 40.
