LUBBOCK, Texas -Wrapping up its season hosting its last three Big 12 matches, the Texas Tech men's tennis team will host the No. 4 Baylor Bears on Sun., April 15, at 2 p.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The team returned to Lubbock last weekend after playing nine-consecutive road matches. The Red Raiders went 10-0 in singles play with wins over Lamar, 4-0, and New Mexico State, 6-0. Tech's record currently stands at 13-6 overall, 1-2 in Big 12 play.
In the beginning of February, the Raiders suffered a 5-2 loss at the hands of No. 56 Denver. After a decision earlier this week by the NCAA concerning the eligibility of DU's Ben Althaus, Tech was granted a 4-3 win over Denver.
Baylor enters the match 16-2 on the season, 2-0 in Big 12. The Bears lead the series 20-17 over the Red Raiders, winning last year 5-2 in Waco. BU's singles lead the Big 12 on multiple courts, with four players being ranked by the ITA/FILA Poll. Playing at No. 1 is No. 13 junior Lars Poerschke, followed by No. 16 Michal Kokta, No. 93 Dominik Mueller, and No. 124 Matija Zgaga. Also in the rankings is the No. 18 doubles pair David Galic and Zgaga, who sit 7-1, 2-0.
Leading in singles for the Red Raiders at No. 3 is sophomore Sinisa Markovic, who boasts a 12-2 duals record, 3-0 in conference. Filling the number one singles position is No. 39 Bojan Szumanski, who is ahead in the Big 12 with a 2-1 record, 7-6 overall. Also in the rankings for the Raiders is the No. 1 duo of Szumanski and Christian Rojmar, currently ranked 51 and sit 7-5 on the season.
