LUBBOCK, Texas - Playing their last home match of the season, the Texas Tech women's tennis team notched one in the win column today taking down the visiting Iowa State Cyclones. The Lady Raiders continue to dominate in the series 13-0 over Iowa State, advancing their record to 10-10, 2-7 heading to the Big 12 tournament.
Doubles play favored the Red Raiders as they knocked out their 11th doubles victory of the season. The No. 1 duo of Janet Durham and Samantha van der Drift got the first win of the day, improving their record to 16-5, 5-4 in Big 12. Tech's Brenna Jackson and Lakann Wagley clinched the point for the team winning 8-3 over ISU's Jill Palen and Caitlin Loprinzi.
In singles, Tech swept in and took the match with three straight singles victories at No. 3, 5 and 1. At No. 1, van der Drift snapped her team's three-match slump and clinched Tech's third Big 12 win. Freshman Kerryn Potgieter couldn't find a break, losing at No. 4 and giving the Cyclones their only point of the match.
Today was senior day as four-year letter winner Lakann Wagley played her final match at McLeod Tennis Center. In fashion, Wagley took advantage of the lime light ending the day in three sets with her 67th career singles win.
"I've been thinking about today for the last four years," said Wagley. "It is a little sad, but I'm also excited it is here and for the opportunity to experience it. Now, I'm just ready to start a new chapter in my life."
Playing her last year at No. 2 singles and both No. 1 and 2 doubles, Wagley sits in Tech's top 10 record book in five categories including second in career singles victories with 67, and is tied for first in career doubles victories with former partner Tara Browning with 78. The two were named All-Big 12 Doubles in 2005 and 2006, and Wagley has been named to the Academic All-Big 12 second team the past two seasons.
In recognition of her tenure as a Red Raider, Wagley's mother LaTashia Lindsay donated a new officials chair to be placed on the No. 2 singles court in honor of her daughter's accomplishments at Tech. Wagley is also the first player to compete all four years under head Coach Cari Groce.
"I'm really happy for Lakann," commented Groce. "The team was geared up for her last home match, and I feel she really played well as her opponent was one of Iowa State's best players. I'm just pleased she could come out with a win."
The Lady Raiders will travel early to Kansas City, Mo., to finish the match against Nebraska, playing only for the doubles point. For more information and complete results, visit www.texastech.com.
