Red Raiders Close Out Regular Season
The scenario is pretty simple for the Red Raiders this weekend in Norman. Sweep or go home.
After suffering a devastating series sweep at home over the weekend against Oklahoma State, the Red Raiders find themselves needing a series sweep of Oklahoma in order to advance to the postseason. Three Tech wins over Oklahoma and one loss by Kansas to Nebraska over the weekend will ensure the Red Raiders a trip to the Big 12 Championship at Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City next week. However, one loss this weekend will keep the Red Raiders out of the Big 12 Tournament for the first time since the 2003 season. Tech has been the No. 8 seed in the Big 12 Tournament in each of the last two seasons and is in danger of missing the postseason event for just the second time in history.
The long layoff for finals proved to be too much for Tech over the weekend against Oklahoma State as the Cowboys completed the three-game sweep with a pair of shutouts. The last time Tech was shutout in back-to-back games was against Texas in 2004. The Red Raiders snapped the losing skid with a come-from-behind (9-8) effort against New Mexico in the home season finale on Monday but fell victim to New Mexico State 5-4 on Tuesday night in a game played in Roswell, N.M.
The Oklahoma Sooners find themselves needing a series win or sweep just as badly as Tech does as they are currently tied with Baylor for seventh place with a 9-15 record. Oklahoma dropped a three-game series at Missouri (2-1) over the weekend but rebounded with a 10-6 win over Stephen F. Austin on Monday night.
