LUBBOCK, Texas - Megan Dowdy is pulling off quite a juggling act. The Texas Tech junior golfer is on the verge of competing in one of professional golf's most prestigious tournaments and one of amateur golf's top events.
Dowdy tied for first with a single-round 75 at the U.S. Women's Open qualifying round May 21 at Canyon Creek Country Club in Richardson, Texas. Two days later, she shot a 79 to finish second in sectional qualifying for the Women's Amateur Public Links at Thornetree Golf Club in Desoto, Texas.
Dowdy will compete in the Women's Amateur Public Links at Kearney Hills Golf Links in Lexington, Ky., June 18-23.
Sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open is June 11 at Westwood Country Club in Houston. If Dowdy, one of 18 golfers in the round, makes it through the sectional round, she will become the first Texas Tech women's golfer to compete in a U.S. Open, when the event tees off June 28-July 1 at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C.
