LUBBOCK, Texas - The Lady Raiders golf team opened its fall season by shooting a 901 over three rounds of play to finish in eighth place in a tough 20-team field at the Ptarmigan Classic in Fort Collins, Colo. Monday and Tuesday.
"We got off to a solid start for the season," Tech coach Stacey Totman said. "We beat some quality teams. The freshmen rally stepped up well. I was very pleased."
Gloriana Soto turned in a strong showing. The junior from San Jose, Costa Rica, came in ninth place with a five-over 221 to lead Tech. Alex Gibson finished in 29th place with a nine-over 225, while Rosalyn Kim was right behind at 226. Freshman Stephanie Smith shot a 231 and Ulrika Van Niekerk came out with a 234. Soto and Kim fired the best round scores for TTU at 72.
The Lady Raiders came out hot in the beginning and fired an opening-round 299 behind Kim's 72 to place themselves among the leaders. Tech came back in the second round with a solid 300 to keep itself in a good position heading into the last round. The Lady Raiders finished the last round with a 302 to come in eighth.
Colorado and Baylor were the only other competing schools from the Big 12. CU tied for third, while the Bears finished two spots behind TTU in 10th.
Tech will be home for a couple days this week before heading to Denver, Colo. for the Ron Moore Invitational Sept. 17-18.
