GETTING STARTED
- Baylor won the opening coin toss and elected to defer. Tech is now 6-6 on the year in the opening toss.
- Today's game was televised nationally by Versus and marked Tech's ninth televised game of the season and the first on the Versus network this year. Tech's only other appearance on Versus was at TCU in 2006.
- Anthony Hines made his first start of the season at strong safety in replacement of Daniel Charbonnet. Charbonnet did not dress for today's game. Brent Nickerson started in place of Jamar Wall at left corner as Wall missed his first start of the year.
- Weather conditions at kickoff: Mostly sunny skies; 53 degrees; winds from the NNW at 15mph.
- Today's attendance was 53,470. The Red Raiders have now sold out Jones AT&T Stadium six consecutive games. BIG 12 SOUTH CO-CHAMPIONS!
Texas Tech capped off the best regular-season in school history this afternoon with a share of the Big 12 South Division Championship by beating the Baylor Bears 35-28. The Big 12 South Co-Championship is the first-ever for the Red Raiders. Tech's previous best was a second place finish in the Big 12 South in 2005. Texas Tech must have Oklahoma State defeat Oklahoma tonight in Stillwater to advance to the Big 12 Championship game next week in Kansas City.
RED RAIDERS CAP BEST REGULAR-SEASON IN SCHOOL HISTORY
Texas Tech's 35-28 win over Baylor gave the Red Raiders an 11-1 record and the best regular-season in school history. Texas Tech's previous record for wins was 10 in 1932, 1938, 1953, 1973 and 1976.
TEXAS STATE CHAMPIONS
Texas Tech capped off a mythical state championship tonight as the Red Raiders defeated Baylor 35-28. Tech has defeated four teams in the state of Texas this year including SMU, Texas A&M, Texas and Baylor. The last time that Tech defeated every Texas team it faced was in 2002.
SENIOR SALUTE
Texas Tech introduced its 19-member senior class at Jones AT&T Stadium today for the final time. The following showcases the accomplishments of this talented group of Red Raiders.
- Will leave Texas Tech as the winningest senior class in school history. The group has 37 wins dating back to the 2005 season.
- Played in two New Year's Day bowl games with a possible third on the horizon.
- Made history as sophomore by setting a new NCAA record for the largest comeback (31 points) in a bowl game as they topped Minnesota in overtime at the 2006 Insight Bowl.
- Gave Texas Tech its' first-ever 11-win regular season in 2008.
- Quarterback Graham Harrell is the school's all-time leading passer, touchdown passes leader, completions leader and total offense leader.
NOTING THE RED RAIDERS
- Senior receiver Eric Morris scored the first touchdown of the game when he hauled in a 6-yard pass in the back of the endzone to give the Red Raiders a 6-0 lead with 10:29 remaining in the first quarter. The touchdown reception was his eighth of the year.
- Baylor scored a touchdown on its opening drive of the game and it marked the first time the Red Raider defense has allowed that against the Bears since the 2004 season.
- Sophomore running back Baron Batch helped give Tech the lead 14-13 with 7:18 remaining in the first half when he scored on a one-yard run. Batch added another touchdown with 12:20 remaining in the game and now has seven TD's on the ground this season.
- With his touchdown in the third quarter, RB Shannon Woods claimed sole possession of fifth place on the Tech career rushing TDs list, passing Bobby Cavazos (32 / 1951-53). Woods has 33 rushing scores in his career.
- Texas Tech had a 95-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter and the Red Raiders now have eight 90-plus yard drives on the year.
