LUBBOCK, Texas - Megan Dowdy fired a five-over 77 to lead No. 50 Texas Tech in Monday's second round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. The Red Raiders currently sit in 15th place with a plus-39 615 in the talent-laden field at the Cocoa Beach Resort in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
Kent State carded a one-under 287 for the day to leap into the top spot on the team leaderboard. No. 27 LSU is in the second spot, while No. 6 Arkansas, No. 16 Alabama and No. 30 TCU round off the top five teams. The Red Raiders are just three strokes behind No. 34 Oklahoma and four behind No. 42 North Carolina State. They are 13 strokes ahead of No. 40 Iowa State.
After Sunday's opening-round 302, Tech found itself in the hunt for a top five position. The links were not as kind to the Red Raiders on the second day, however. Dowdy's 77 led the way and put her in a tie for 47th with freshman teammate Stephanie Smith at 153. Smith and Ulrika Van Niekerk both shot 78's Monday, with Gloriana Soto, 80, and Robyn Scott 82 capping off the scoring for Tech.
Tuesday's final round will tee off at 7 a.m. CT with a shotgun start. Results of the event can be found at www.golfstat.com or www.texastech.com.
