LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The 2008 season started off on a down note for Texas Tech softball as the Red Raiders dropped their first two games of the Sportco Spring Kick Off Classic Friday afternoon. Tech fell to No. 11/14 Washington (2-0) 8-1 before dropping a close 2-0 decision to UNLV (1-0) in its second game of the day.
Leah Legler went 2-4 with a pair of singles against the Huskies, while Megan Shupp was 1-2 with an RBI double. Jennifer Corkin extended her hitting streak to eight games dating back to last year against UW, but she saw it snapped against the Rebels.
Washington came out swinging in the early going with three runs in the first. The Huskies added another in the second before Tech got on the board in the bottom half of the second on Shupp's double that scored Montana Patin. The Red Raiders threatened again a couple times, but they could not manage to pick up anything more. UW added four runs in the top of the fifth to seal the win. Sarah Losleben took the loss in the circle for Tech, who picked up six hits for the game, while freshman Tye Coats struck out three in two scoreless innings of relief.
The second game of the day was a pitchers duel as Ashly Jacobs battled UNLV's Stephanie Bregante to a stalemate through four innings. The Rebels managed to sneak across two in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of singles. Whitney Riley and Patin collected the Red Raiders' only hits of the afternoon against UNLV, while Coats took the loss in the circle in relief.
Tech will look to bounce back tomorrow when it takes on Loyola-Chicago at 12 p.m. and No. 3/2 Arizona State at 4:30 pm CT.
