LUBBOCK, Texas - The final day of the H.E.B Invitational proved huge for the Red Raiders as they defeated host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-2, to clinch the championship.
Junior Sinisa Markovic started the day off well for the team by scoring the first point over Mikhail Pavlov. Michael Breler also added another one to the win column playing in the No. 6 position defeating James Langford in straight sets, making him 11-0 on the season.
Tech's momentum was stalled by the Islanders Dmitry Novikov as he stole both sets from senior Lenoir Ramos. Meanwhile sophomore Christian Rojmar battled hard in the No. 5 spot claiming victory over Jaume Farras in three sets. The Islanders struck again as Jose Zunino scored a victory in a tough fought match over No. 82 Ilya Babinciuc, putting the score at 3-2.
Tech's No. 1 Bojan Szumanski was the final player remaining on the court with the fate of the match on the line. In what proved to be a tough match for both players, Szumanski moved in to clinch the 4-2 victory for the Red Raiders over the Islanders' Laurent Montoisy, 7-5, 6-4, 7-5. "We had an incredible win today," said Coach Tim Siegel. "I cannot say enough about Bojan, who was down 4-1 in the third and came back to win the match for us. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is a good team, and wins this weekend will be huge for us down the road."
Men's tennis returns home to the McLeod Tennis Center next Saturday to host Denver at 12:30 p.m.
