LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech placed themselves among the top 25 teams in the nation today in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll. Next on tap the men's tennis team travels to Montgomery, Ala., for the prestigious Blue-Gray Classic. Tech is one of fourteen nationally ranked opponents compiling this year's 16-team draw.
Since 1949, Montgomery has played host to hundreds of aspiring tennis athletes. Jack Bushman is credited with the idea of the renowned tournament, with the vision of bringing some of the top college tennis players together on one stage. For the first 30 years, the Blue Gray tournament was an individual contest rather than the present day team competition.
Some of the top tennis players and programs in the country continue to gather annually at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center to participate in this highly touted tournament. This year's field is comprised of returning champion No. 8 Tulsa, No. 19 Virginia Commonwealth, No. 21 Alabama, No. 24 Oklahoma State, No. 25 Texas Tech, No. 28 Auburn, No. 30 Notre Dame, No. 35 Boise State, No. 46 Oklahoma, No. 48 Fresno, No. 49 North Carolina State, No. 60 William and Mary, No. 64 Wisconsin, No. 65 Penn State, Brown, and Furman.
Last time out the Red Raiders returned to McLeod Tennis Center after a four-week stint on the road to host No. 44 Denver. Tech fell short in doubles as the No. 2 ranked duo of Bojan Szumanski and Christian Rojmar suffered an 8-6 loss at the hands of DU's No. 9 team of Adam Holmstrom and Niklas Persson. The Raiders regrouped in singles as they swept four straight wins, capping off the match with a 5-2 victory and advancing to 12-1 on the season.
Play begins on Thurs., March 13, as Texas Tech will take on Wisconsin at 4 p.m. For the complete draw and more information, log on to www.bluegraytennis.com.
