Lady Raiders Blow By Cyclones

AMES, Iowa - Recovering from a disappointing loss to their first Big 12 opponent Nebraska the day before, the women's tennis team was able to take a 5-2 win on the road over the Iowa State Cyclones yesterday at the Forker Tennis Center. The Lady Raiders advance to 8-5 in dual matches this spring, 1-1 in conference play.
The freshmen pair of Kelsy Garland and Simone Templeton set the tone of the match early winning 8-2 at No. 3. Soon following, the veteran No. 2 duo of senior Janet Durham and junior Samantha van der Drift clinched the doubles point over the Cyclones Kara Hickey and Caitlin Loprinzi, winning 8-5. Brenna Jackson and Kerryn Potgieter made their first appearance in Tech's No. 1 doubles spot in good fashion defeating Chrissy Derouin and Erin Karonis 7-3 in the tie-breaker.
Garland gave Tech its second point by knocking out another win at No. 2 taking down ISU's Hickey in straight sets. The Cyclones Karonis proved too much for van der Drift despite a close first set, finally putting ISU on the scoreboard. Fortunately the Lady Raiders ceased any hopes of a comeback by Iowa State, sinking in three straight singles victories at positions three, four and five. Potgieter rolled passed Derouin 6-1, 6-4, while Templeton continued her defensive stand winning in three sets. It was senior Durham who clinched the match for her team for the third time this season, defeating Alyssa Palen, 6-2, 6-4.
"I'm very proud with the way the team rebounded in this match," said Coach Cari Groce. "Iowa State is a very improved team and really came after us hard. The team was poised and handled themselves well in this match."
