LUBBOCK, Texas - Ending a very successful four-weekend road trip, the Texas Tech men's tennis team returns to the McLeod Tennis Center to host Denver on Sat., March 8, at noon in their first home match since February 1st.
The 11-1 Red Raiders had a successful outing at the 2008 H.E.B. Invitational going 3-0 in matches on the weekend, walking away with the tournament championship. Three singles players also notched in three wins during the tournament as Michael Breler continued his streak at No. 6, Sinisa Markovic stood strong at No. 2, and Bojan Szumanski held down the No. 1 spot. Senior Szumanski led his team to victory by clinching two match points, including the 4-2 championship win over host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Tech found itself at No. 30 in the latest ITA national poll released earlier this week, boasting two top-50 doubles teams and Szumanski ranked No. 35 in singles. The duo of Szumanski and Christian Rojmar remained consistent at No. 2, as Breler and Markovic moved to No. 42.
Last season Tech hosted the Pioneers indoors at the Falls Country Club, where they fell short of the win 4-3. The Red Raiders look to redeem themselves this weekend as they know they will face some stiff competition in both doubles and singles action. Leading Denver in singles is No. 12 Adam Holmstrom who currently sits 21-3, 10-0 in matches this spring. Holmstrom and teammate Niklas Persson are currently No. 9 in the nation in doubles and post a 7-0 duals record, 20-3 overall.
At the match will be FREE pizza and special give-a-ways, including movie line trivia, a serving for dough contest between doubles and singles matches, and a raffle for Texas Tech memorabilia. For more information, log on to www.texastech.com.
