Van der Drift Caps 4-3 Win Over Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Lady Raider tennis sunk in their fourth conference win today as they edged the No. 70 Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kan. After going 2-0 in matches during the weekend, Tech advances to 11-7 in dual matches, 4-3 in conference play.
Tech was unable to get the early advantage on the Jayhawks as they dropped the doubles point with losses in the No. 2 and 3 positions. The No. 1 duo of Janet Durham and Samantha van der Drift were the only team able to pull out a win, taking Elizaveta Avdeeva and Edina Horvath in the tiebreaker 8-6.
Senior Durham continued to knock out wins at No. 3 as she was the first to put Tech on the board by dominating Horvath in straight sets. Kansas retaliated and took a 3-1 lead with wins on courts five and six over Kerryn Potgieter and Leah Roberts, respectively. Tech freshman Kelsy Garland was the next to strike on court two, winning the second set tiebreaker over KU's Avdeeva. Freshman Simone Templeton soon followed with a win of her own at No. 4, defeating Kunigunda Dorn in three sets. With the score at 3-3, the junior-veteran van der Drift clinched her third match of the season for the Red Raiders at No. 1 by breaking Magdalena Tokarczyk in the third set.
"Today's match was definitely one of our better performances, as the team rallied back from a 3-1 deficit for the win," said Assistant Coach Todd Petty. "The work effort and competitiveness of the team was very strong today, and all of their hard work paid off in the end."
