Lady Raiders Dominate UNT for First Win

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis squad gave interim coach Todd Petty his first win as it beat North Texas 6-1 at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The Lady Raiders (1-0) took the first point by sweeping the double matches. The No. 10 Southwest regional double team of Samantha van der Drift and Kelsy Garland defeated Irina Parashiv and Paula Dinuta 8-6 in a closely contested battle.
Tech took the second doubles match behind an 8-4 victory by Simone Templeton and Kerryn Potgieter as they beat the North Texas team of Rachel Wilhelm and Amy Joubert.
The third doubles match was dominated in an 8-2 win by Natalie Leitch and Stefanie Peana as they took out Catalina Cruz and Narine Kazarova.
The Lady Raiders continued its strong start in singles play as they swept four of the six matches. No. 15 Southwest regional ranked Samantha van der Drift won her first match of the spring 7-5, 6-3 over Irina Paraschiv.
Kelsy Garland beat Paula Dinuta 6-2, 6-2 and Stefanie Peana won 6-3, 6-2 over Amy Joubet. Kerryn Potgeiter was the fourth-straight set win as she defeated Rachel Wilhelm 6-2, 6-1. Simone Templeton won the sixth point in a 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 decision over Catalina Cruz. The lone loss for Tech came as Natalie Leitch was defeated by Narine Kazarova 6-2, 0-6, 10-7.
Tech returns to action against Mississippi State on Sunday at 9 a.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center.
