LUBBOCK, Texas - In his first tournament of year, Texas Tech sophomore Raony Carvalho won his opening match of the ITA All-American Tennis Championships today at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
The 25th-ranked Carvalho defeated No. 20 Boris Conkic (Tennessee), 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, in his first-round match.
The match started off with each player breaking the other's serve three-straight times before Carvalho held serve at 4-3. He then went on to win the next two games to clinch the first set. In the second set, there were no breaks in serve through the first nine games and then Conkic broke Carvalho in the 10th game. In the third set, Carvalho was up a break at 3-1 and was broken back to level the match at three all. Then Carvalho broke serve at 5-5 and held serve to claim the win.
"It was a tremendous win for Ray," said head coach Tim Siegel. "It was possibly the best match he has played at Texas Tech. He showed very good poise and played a very, very smart all-around match against one of the top players in the country."
Carvalho will face the No. 12 seed and 13th-ranked Justin Kronauge (Ohio State) tomorrow in the round of 32.
