LUBBOCK, Texas - The second day of the ITA All-American Tennis Championships took place today and Texas Tech's No. 25 Raony Carvalho won his round of 32 match, but lost in the round of 16 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Carvalho started the day by upsetting No. 13 Just Kronauge (Ohio State), 7-6 (4), 6-7 (9), 6-3, in the round of 32. Carvalho failed to convert seven match points at the end of the second set, however, he came back strong to win the third set to claim the victory. The win marked his highest-ranked win as a Red Raider.
In the round of 16, Carvalho fell in straight sets to No. 40 Andrei Daescu (Oklahoma), 6-1, 6-2.
"Ray had the biggest win of his career this morning in a three-hour match," said head coach Tim Siegel. "This afternoon he faced a better player as (Andrei) Daeschu is a very though player. Unfortunately, Ray didn't have enough left in him to make it a more competitive match. Overall, it was a very good tournament for Ray."
The Red Raiders will be back in action on Oct. 24-27, at the ITA Regionals in College Station, Texas.
