Lady Raiders Win First Match of Barnes Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis squad won its first match of the Barnes Collegiate Invitational in San Diego, Calif., 6-1 over Northern Arizona as No. 44 Kelsy Garland and Samantha van der Drift extend their win streak to six in doubles play.
Garland and van der Drift started the match off with an 8-2 victory over Edit Suhajda and Orsi Golovics. Kerryn Potgieter and Stefanie Peana won 8-5 over Kim van Ginkel and Leslie Vial. The duo is now 3-4 on the season.
Tech swept the doubles point as Simone Templeton and Natalie Letich beat Stacey Pinchbeck and Yumi Hasegawa 8-4.
The Lady Raiders pushed the lead to 2-0 after No. 2 player Garland won in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 over Suhajda. Northern Arizona closed the gap to 2-1 as Hasegawa defeated Kyla Coleman 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 6 position.
The score never got closer as Tech won the next four matches. No. 3 player Simone Templeton won 6-4, 7-6 (5) Golovics.
Leitch clinched the match for the Lady Raiders as she defeated Vial 7-6, 6-1. Van der Drift added to the lead as she beat van Ginkel 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and Templeton tacked on the final point beating Pinchbeck 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Tech continues tournament play tomorrow against either New Mexico or Utah at 9:30 a.m. (PST).
