Lady Raiders Fall to Utah at Barnes Collegiate Invite

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team fell 4-3 to No. 53 Utah at the Barnes Collegiate Invitational in San Diego, despite Kelsy Garland and Natalie Letich's third straight singles win.
Tech (5-8, 0-3) started double play on the wrong foot as Kerryn Potgieter and Stefanie Peana fell 8-4 to Anastasia Putalina and Elizabeth Johnson in the No. 2 position. Utah clinched the doubles point in the No. 3 doubles match. Leigh Walsh and Karine Bourdages beat Simone Templeton and Leitch 8-6.
The No. 44 duo of Garland and Samantha van der Drift lost their first match in seven matches. The duo of Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan won 8-7 (7). It is the first loss for Garland and van der Drift since falling to Rice.
The Lady Raiders fought back in singles action as No. 4 player Leitch won her third-straight match 6-4, 6-3 over Walsh. Utah took the lead after the No. 6 singles match. Bourdages defeated Potgieter in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
Tech again evened the score and No. 3 player Templeton beat Johnson 6-2, 7-6 (2). In the No. 1 singles match Putalina beat van der Drift in three sets 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 giving Utah a 3-2 lead. The match was clinched for Utah in the No. 5 position as Peana lost to Lexi Provancha in a tough three set match 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Garland extended her win streak in singles play to three as she beat Monson in the No. 2 match 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Tech completes tournament play tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. (MST) against San Diego.
