Texas Tech Drops Match to Tennessee at Blue Gray Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 33 Texas Tech men's tennis team could not get past No. 4 Tennessee in the second round of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic as the Volunteers downed the Red Raiders, 4-2, at the Lagoon Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala.
The Red Raiders (9-6) got on the board first winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and 3 positions. Tech's David Gonzalez and Gonzalo Escobar won eight-straight games for an 8-0 win at No. 3, and then 15th-ranked Raony Carvalho and Christian Rojmar clinched the doubles points by upsetting Tennessee's eighth-ranked duo of John-Patrick Smith and Davey Sandgren, 8-6, at the No. 1 spot.
However, the Volunteers (12-3) came back strong in the singles portion by winning four matches to claim the victory. Tech's lone win in singles play came at the No. 6 position at Milos Kustudija defeated Christian Hansen, 7-6 (3), 6-1.
"Today was a great college tennis match," stated head coach Tim Siegel. "We have been through a lot of close, hard-fought losses. We gave the No. 4 team in the country a heck of a match. We had our opportunities, but Tennessee is a great team and I'm proud of how we played. This long 12-day trip will be successful if we get out tomorrow and play well."
Tech will play Big 12 foe No. 25 Oklahoma State in a consolation match on Sat., March 21, at 8:30 a.m.
