Red Raiders Knock Off Nebraska, 5-2
April 12, 2009 | Men's Tennis
April 12, 2009
LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 35-ranked Texas Tech men's tennis team won four of six singles matches and the doubles point en route to a 5-2 victory Sunday over No. 55 Nebraska at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
With the win, the Red Raiders improve to 12-8 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 play as they enter the final week of conference action. The Huskers drop to 16-8 overall and 0-5 in conference.
Tech started the match in good fashion as its top two doubles tandems picked up victories, including an 8-3 victory by Sinisa Markovic and Michael Breler over the No. 59-ranked duo of David Bendheim and Calin Paar. Tech's No. 12-ranked tandem of Raony Carvalho and Christian Rojmar topped Chris Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim, 8-4, at the top position.
In singles, Carvalho continued his hot streak, downing Bendheim, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 1 position, while Rojmar dropped Parr, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 3 slot. Tech also got wins from Breler at the No. 4 position, defeating Lindheim, 6-3, 6-4, and Milos Kustudija edged Renato Melo, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 6 slot.
Nebraska's Aumueller overcame a dropped first set to rally past Markovic, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 2 slot, while Hendrik Stahmer got past David Gonzales, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 5 position.
"This is probably the biggest win of the season for us for two different reasons," Tech head coach Tim Siegel said. "First, we played our best singles of the year up and down the lineup. Then, we beat a quality Nebraska team, who was 0-4 in the Big 12 coming in with all four losses coming at 4-3 deficits. They are obviously a good team, so this was a tremendous team win for us."
The Red Raiders face a quick turnaround as they play host to three home matches within the next seven days, beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday against No. 7 Baylor. Tech closes the weekend against No. 31 Oklahoma State at 6 p.m. Fri., April 17, and No. 34 Oklahoma at 1 p.m. Sun., April 19.
