Aggies Topple Tech in Singles to Win 5-2

LUBBOCK, Texas - After taking the doubles point, the No. 32-ranked Texas Tech men's tennis team dropped five of six singles matches to fall to No. 14 Texas A&M, 5-2, Friday night at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders opened the match strong winning all three doubles matches, led by the No. 12-ranked tandem of Raony Carvalho and Christian Rojmar's 9-8 (5) victory over the nation's fourth-ranked duo of Conor Pollock and Austin Krajicek.
The Aggies would rebound from there, however, winning the first five completed singles matches to seal the match. Pollock, Krajicek, and A&M's other ranked singles player, Wil Spencer, would all sweep Tech's top of the lineup, including No. 58 Carvalho. Tech's lone singles win came after the match was already decided as Gonzalo Escobar overcame a dropped first set to defeat Alexey Grigorov.
"We got beat by a better team tonight," Tech head coach Tim Siegel said. "We have to give all credit to A&M. We weren't competitive in four of the matches. Unfortunately, our four seniors did not play very well, but we will have to put this behind us and get ready for a tough match on Sunday."
With the loss, Tech drops to 11-7 overall and 0-1 in Big 12 play, while A&M improves to 12-5 and 3-0 in conference.
The Red Raiders continue their Big 12-opening weekend Sunday, facing No. 11 Texas at 1 p.m. Sunday in Austin.
