WACO, Texas - Texas Tech senior Rosalyn Kim, from Belton, ousted future Red Raider Gabriella Dominguez, from Chilton, in the round-of-16 at the Women's Texas Golf Association State Amateur Championship on Wednesday at Ridgewood Country Club.
Meanwhile, Tech sophomore Alex Gibson, from Lubbock, defeated defending champion Haley Brown of Austin.Kim and Gibson each advance to Thursday morning's quarterfinal matches. If both win, they'll meet in the semifinals Thursday afternoon.
Kim eagled the par-5 No. 9 to take the lead against Dominguez, a Red Raider signee who will begin her Tech career next month. Kim went on to win the match, 4 and 3, closing it out with a par on the par-4 No. 15. Gibson took out Brown, 2 and 1.
Texas Tech coach JoJo Robertson attended Wednesday's play at the tournament. Robertson, hired in June, said she was thrilled to see her new charges in a competitive environment.
"I was looking forward to this to come out here and watch all three of them play," Robertson said. "I'm really impressed with both of their games. Rosalyn, you can tell, has quite a bit of experience and hopefully she'll be one of our team leaders. I think that Gabby probably learned a lot from her today and getting more experience with match play is good too."
