LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech redshirt freshman Dawn Ward was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week Tuesday as announced by the conference office. Ward is the first Red Raider to earn a weekly accolade this season.
The Midland native netted a goal in each of Tech's matches last weekend, including her first career game-winning goal in the 2-1 victory over Weber State. Ward connected on Tech's only goal against Alabama in the 58th minute, sending the match into overtime. She paced the Tech offense with 11 shots, including six on goal, on the weekend.
Ward leads the Red Raiders with a team-high seven goals and 14 points. She is only the sixth Tech player all-time to earn a Big 12 weekly award and third to be named the conference's newcomer of the week.
Whitney Hooper (Texas A&M) and Kelsey Devonshire (Oklahoma) were both tabbed the conference's offensive and defensive players of the week.
The Red Raiders begin Big 12 play this weekend, facing Iowa State at 7 p.m. Friday and Nebraska at noon Sunday. The Nebraska match was moved an hour earlier Monday to coincide with the Cornhuskers' travel arrangements.
