LUBBOCK, Texas - Beverly Mendoza fired an even-par 72 to lead Texas Tech in Tuesday's final round of the Lady Northern Invitational as the Lady Raiders wrapped the tournament fifth overall.
Playing at the Lake Shore Country Club in Glencoe, Ill., Tech concluded the day with an 11-over 299 that put the Lady Raiders 27-over for the tournament. Mendoza led the way as she was the only Lady Raider to post an even-par or better final round en route to finishing in a tie for 15th overall.
After beginning the season with two-straight top-five finishes, Kim Kaufman was unable to keep that streak alive on Tuesday, finishing in a tie for 25th with teammate Deborah DeVilla at 8-over. Kaufman posted a 3-over 75 final round, while DeVilla finished the day with a 4-over 76.
Gabby Dominguez wrapped Tech's scorecard with a 9-over 81 that sent the sophomore in a tie for 32nd at 11-over. Tech's two other players, Alex Gibson and Hannah Arnold, both shot 4-over in the final round to finish 22-over for the tournament.
"We certainly had the opportunity to shoot a good score today," Tech head coach JoJo Robertson said. "Beverly's 72 helped a lot and kept us in the mix. We'll work hard the rest of the week and prepare for next week where we will face another strong field."
For the second-straight week, Purdue ran away with the tournament, finishing 6-under-par, while its nearest competition, Northwestern, finished in second at 11-over. Ohio State struggled in its final round for a third-place finish at 19-over, and Iowa State, who began the day six strokes behind the Lady Raiders, was able to sneak by Tech for fourth place at 23-over after a 1-over 289 final round.
The Lady Raiders conclude their fall schedule next week at the Landfall Tradition Collegiate Golf Tournament in Wilmington, N.C. The three-day event begins Oct. 22 at the Landfall's Pete Day Course, the site of last spring's NCAA Women's National Championships.
