
Lady Raiders Cross Country Wins Third-Straight Big 12 Title

LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 4 Texas Tech Lady Raiders cross country team, led by Big 12 individual champion Rose Tanui, won their third-straight Big 12 title becoming the second school in Big 12 history to accomplish the feat.
"It was an outstanding effort by all the ladies," head coach Jon Murray said after the race. "It was great job by the entire team today"
Tanui ran the course in impressive fashion as she won in a time of 20:04.34, and beat the field by 14 seconds overall. It is the fourth victory for Tanui as she was also named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.
"She (Rose Tanui) looked fantastic, ran a great race and was pretty much unchallenged the entire time, Murray said of Tanui. "It was a great race. She looked strong and confident and it is great having another newcomer and champion."
Tanui becomes the second runner to win the Big 12 individual title and Big 12 Newcomer of the Year award. The previous winner of both was former Lady Raider Sally Kipyego.
Caroline Jepleting was the next Lady Raider to cross the line as she was sixth overall in a time of 20:28.81. Teammate Caroline Karunde was right behind in seventh running a time of 20:33.39. Both earned All-Big 12 honors for being in the top 15.
Winrose Karunde ran a 20:44.28 and placed 13th and earned All-Big 12 honors. Purity Biwott was the fifth Lady Raider, as she placed 17th in a time of 20:57.16.
The Lady Raiders scored 44 points to beat No. 7 Colorado by nine points. No. 11 Iowa State finished third and No. 27 Oklahoma State placed fourth.
The Red Raiders ran strong in a tough field and placed 10th as a team. No. 2 Oklahoma State won the men's race with 19 points followed by No. 9 Colorado and No. 5 Oklahoma.
Silas Kemboi was the top finisher for the men as he ran a 25:24.11 to place 34th. Gilbert Limo wasn't far behind as he placed 37th running a 25:24.95.
Nathan Milles covered the course in a time of 26:15.97 to finish 54th and he was followed by Samuel Bushong running a 26:40.20 placing 66th. Reid Strong was the fifth runner for Tech as he ran a time of 26:40.20 and was 68th.
The next race for Tech cross country will be the NCAA Mountain Regionals in Provo, Utah.
