LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's golf team wrapped the first two rounds of play at the Windy City Collegiate Championship in third place Monday after firing a 27-over 595 at the Northmoor Country Club in Highland Park, Ill.
Gabby Dominguez heads into Tuesday's final round in a tie for sixth place after a 4-over 75 first round that was followed by an even-par 71 performance in the afternoon session. Dominguez' second round figured to shoot the sophomore up the leaderboard with four birdies and no bogies over the first 11 holes, but bogies on four of the final five holes leaves her looking to overcome a four-shot deficit in tomorrow's final round.
Besides Dominguez, Kim Kaufman also posted a solid second round, rebounding from a 6-over 77 opening round in the morning session to fire a 1-over 72 in the afternoon that leaves the sophomore in a tie for 14th overall.
Beverly Mendoza was in contention for the individual title after an opening-round 1-under 70 that left the Philippines native atop the leaderboard. Mendoza was unable to quite find her stroke in the second round, however, finishing with a 12-over 83 that sent the sophomore into a tie for 21st place.
Paloma Martinez trails Mendoza by a stroke following a 9-over 80 first round and 3-over 74 second round. Deborah DeVilla finished 14-over over the two rounds with a 6-over 77 opening round and 8-over 79 second round.
"We got off to a good start this morning with Beverly's 1-under, and the team got stronger as the day went on," head coach JoJo Robertson said. "I am proud of everyone's effort and looking forward to tomorrow."
Defending national champion Purdue leads the team totals as the Boilermakers finished the two rounds 15-over, two strokes lower than second-place Iowa State. The Lady Raiders maintain a nine-stroke lead over San Diego State and Northwestern, who are tied for fourth at 36-over-par.
Iowa State is a mainstay at the top of the individual leaderboard with the top-two spots belonging to the Cyclones' Prima Thammaraks (E, 142) and Victoria Stefansen (2-over 144).
