LUBBOCK, Texas - Kim Kaufman recorded her second-consecutive top-five finish while leading the Texas Tech women's golf team to a third place finish Tuesday at the Windy City Collegiate Championship, held at the Northmoor Country Club in Highland Park, Ill.
Entering the day in a tie for 14th, Kaufman raced up the leaderboard on the back nine as the sophomore recorded three birdies in the final five holes to finish the day with a 1-under 70. Kaufman, whose only blemish in the final round was a double-bogey on No. 4, finished the tournament at 6-over overall and in a tie with Laurence Herman of Iowa State. She also finished fourth in the season-opening Ptarmigan Ram Classic last month.
Gabby Dominguez came close to joining Kaufman in the top five but fell a stroke short, finishing in a tie for sixth after a 3-over 74 final round. Dominguez began the round 4-over during the first 12 holes, but birdies at No. 14 and No. 16 brought the sophomore back to 7-over for the tournament.
After beginning the final round even over the front nine, Deborah DeVilla slipped into the top 20 after firing a 2-over 73 that brought the sophomore into a tie for 19th overall.
Beverly Mendoza wrapped the tournament with an 8-over 79 that put her in a tie for 30th at 19-over. Tech's last remaining player, Paloma Martinez, fired a 12-over 83 final round to finish 24-over for the tournament.
Tech concluded the tournament with a 39-over 891, eight strokes behind second-place Iowa State. Purdue, last year's national champion captured its third-consecutive Windy City Collegiate Championship title after finishing 24-over for the tournament.
"It was a very good finish and a total team effort," head coach JoJo Robertson said. "Deb carried us in the No. 5 spot and I thought Kim and Gabby finishing in fourth and sixth was great. It was a strong field and for us to be in the final group was a good experience that will benefit us later in the year."
Backed by a 1-under 70 final round, The Boilermakers' Numa Gulyanamitta claimed the individual title at 2-over for the tournament, while TCU's Brooke Beeler and Iowa State's Prima Thammaraks tied for runner-up. ¬
The Lady Raiders return to Illinois next week for the Lady Northern Classic. The tournament runs Oct. 11-12 at the Lake Shore Country Club in Glencoe, Ill.
