LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 41 Texas Tech men's tennis team won its first of two matches this week as it topped No. 40 TCU, 5-2, at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth on Friday.
The match began with doubles action with the Red Raiders (6-1) winning the doubles points as they won all three matches over the Horned Frogs (3-2). The 16th-ranked duo of Gonzalo Escobar and Andre Stabile got the first win at the No. 2 spot as they defeated Soren Goritzka and Slah Mbarek, 8-3. Tech claimed the doubles point by winning the next match at No. 3 as Vitor Manzini and Raphael Pfister beat Cameron Nash and Zach Nichols, 9-7. Tech's No. 1 tandem of Raony Carvalho and Rafael Garcia wrapped up doubles with a win over Christopher Price and Emanuel Brighiu, 8-7 (3).
Singles play started off strong for the Red Raiders as they took five of the first six sets, only losing a total of seven games in those five-winning sets. No. 63-ranked Carvalho finished first, dropping Marius-Adrian Cirstea, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1. The next victory came at No. 6 as Pfister beat Price, 6-1, 6-0. Clinching the match for Tech was 41st-ranked Escobar at No. 2 as he easily defeated Brighiu, 6-1, 6-2. The last win for Tech was Stabile at No. 4 as he won in straight sets as well over Goritzka, 6-3, 7-6 (2).
"This was definitely our most complete match," said head coach Tim Siegel. "I was proud of the way we came out in singles and played aggressively and confidently right off the bat. It was a good win for us but now we have a big match tomorrow against Wisconsin. We have to put this match behind us and get ready for tomorrow."
The Red Raiders now head to College Station, Texas, to take on No. 26 Wisconsin on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M.
